Fernando Decillis

Portrait of Fernando Decillis, volunteer

Commercial photographer Fernando Decillis signed up through Catchafire to become a skill-based volunteer. He says, “I was looking for a chance to meet up with exciting projects that needed imagery for good causes.” His first volunteer experience with the American Cancer Society was in 2017. He also recently completed a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® photo shoot.

Fernando chose the American Cancer Society for volunteering because it’s people-centered. He says, “I love to tell stories about people through imagery. Cancer affects people from all walks of life. I wanted to help tell the stories of people who benefit from the work the American Cancer Society does.”

“The things you already love to do can be immensely impactful to people,” Fernando says. “Sometimes it’s hard to find a way to make a difference. I make pictures for a living. I’m hardly saving lives, but giving people a space to be themselves and share their story is really enriching.”

Plus, he says, it makes you feel really good to give back, especially when you’re giving back by doing something that you’re good at and that you love doing. We couldn’t agree more, Fernando!
